Aug. 29. 1946 - March 7, 1946

NEW YORK, NY -- Richard Lee Holman died from complications of lung cancer and chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) on March 7, 2016, in New York City.

Born in McCook, Neb., he was a beloved husband, son, brother and uncle, and a journalist all of his life. A graduate of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, he worked as a reporter for the Lincoln Journal Star; moved to Monterey, Calif. to become city editor of the Monterey Peninsula Herald; moved to New York City to become a member of the team at Time, Inc., who developed Teletext, a forerunner of broadcasting printed information to televisions equipped with a special decoder. For the next 14 years, he was a columnist for the Wall Street Journal, followed by several years at Morgan Stanley and finally was a senior vice president at HSBC Bank. He proudly served in the U.S. Air Force, was president of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, and until his death, served as a Foundation Trustee for the University of Nebraska Foundation.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Margaret M. Holman; his half-siblings, Benjamin Holman, Sandra Bennett and William Holman; cousins, Rick and Kathy Cartell, Nick and Christine Bettes Cartell; and nieces, Amy Deutsch Khoury and Laura Deutsch Brown.

A superb editor and a voracious reader, he was a true gentleman with a subtle sense of humor.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The University of Nebraska Foundation, 1010 Lincoln Mall, Suite 300, Lincoln, NE 68508 for the Richard and Margaret Holman Scholarship Fund at the College of Journalism and Mass Communications.

Services are pending.
