McCOOK, Neb. -- Velma Ruth Joy, age 90, of McCook, passed away at her home on Sept. 23, 2016. She was born on the family farm south of McCook on April 8, 1926, to Herman and Serena (Zimmerman) Messinger. Ruth graduated from McCook High School in 1943.

She stitched quilts, crocheted, and volunteered at the El Dorado Manor when her mother was a resident. She was an avid University "Big Red" fan, loved golf and dancing. Ruth loved her pets, raising many stray dogs and cats that were left by strangers along the road. She also collected angels.
